Wallace Chair for Sustainable AgricultureNew Chair NamedDr. Matt Liebman, Iowa State University agronomy professor, became the new Henry A. Wallace Endowed Chair for Sustainable Agriculture on July 1, 2007. He succeeded Dr. Lorna Michael Butler who served as Chair from 2000 to 2007. Dr. Liebman will serve as Chair for a five-year term, which can be renewed for up to three additional years. Dr. Liebman is a graduate of Harvard University and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His scientific research focuses on cropping system diversification, conservation systems, and weed ecology and management. Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year AnnouncedThe Agronomy Graduate Student Club named Andrew Heggenstaller the Outstanding Graduate Student of the Year based on academic achievements and departmental service activities. Mr. Heggenstaller is a Ph.D. student co-majoring in Crop Production & Physiology and Biorenewable Resources & Technology. Mr. Heggenstaller's co-major professors are Dr. Matt Liebman in Agronomy and Dr. Rob Anex in Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering. Additional information about Mr. Heggenstaller can be found here. Robert Costanza to speak at Pesek ColloquiumDr. Robert Costanza, the Gund Professor of Ecological Economics and the Director of the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics at the University of Vermont, will be the lecturer for the 2008 John Pesek Colloquium on Sustainable Agriculture. The Colloquium is scheduled for Thursday, September 11, 2008 and will be held at the Iowa State Memorial Union. The title of Dr. Costanza's lecture is Ecological Economics: Creating a Sustainable and Desirable Future. Kathleen Delate and Matt O'Neal, spoke at the Organic Farming Conference held 21-23 February 2008 in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
